ALL THE PROPERTIES OF HPL

The HPL kitchen top is made of laminate that has undergone a high pressure process to obtain a material that isn’t too porous and will resist heat and damage caused by water, water vapour and greases used in the kitchen.

HPL =  HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATE

HPL (High Pressure Laminate) laminates are panels made of cellulose fibre and melamine resin, impregnated with thermosetting resins and subjected to a high pressure process.

Available in a 12 mm thickness, the inside consists of layers of black cellulose fibres, which can also be the same colour as the surface, depending on the chosen finish.

LACQUERED

For those who appreciate a high-end finish, glossy or matt lacquering, paired with simple details, is an option that can be very satisfying. The rounding and thickness of the doors suggests sturdiness and quality to the touch. Not to mention the added benefit of being able to select the colour for the doors, which allows for a very personalised selection from a practically infinite array of possibilities.

Let’s look at the lacquered finish

There are various types of lacquered finishes on the market and it’s important to know how to evaluate what one is seeing.

First of all, think about the base to which the lacquer will be applied.

The ideal base for a lacquered finish, for size stability, durability and resistance, is MDF, Medium Density Fibreboard: a panel made of wood fibres that have been pressed on both sides with specific resins. This base has compact edges that don’t require the application of additional edging, guaranteeing a surface that is entirely smooth.

In the best case scenario this base is prepared for the desired finish using a polyester paint, which offers an elevated dry residue that fills the surface uniformly upon catalysis.

If the base is not made of MDF, wood fibres covered with melamine paper may be considered. In this case we speak of “direct glossy” lacquer.

Meanwhile, when a wood surface is lacquered we speak of an “open pore lacquered” finish: in this case the base is a veneered panel to which a polyurethane or acrylic base is applied so that the wood grain, with its knots and colours, is more or less apparent to the sight and touch.

The lacquering, i.e. the finish that gives the door its colour, may be matt or glossy and is achieved with various paints.

Polyurethane paints offer notable performance since—upon drying and hardening—the lacquer acquires physical and chemical properties of resistance to abrasion, cutting, the effects of the weather and traction.

For a glossy lacquer the surface is brushed to achieved the desired level of “gloss”.

The gloss is a measurement of the extent to which light is reflected: below gloss 30 the lacquer is considered matt, above gloss 60 the surface is glossy. The higher the gloss, the shinier the surface and the lower the orange peel or wave effect on the doors.

The expression “water-based paint” refers to the next generation of paints with an acrylic base that use water as a liquid “medium” for applying the paint to the surface. The amount of resin is not inferior to other paints and, once the water dries and the solvents evaporate, only the resins are left, which are comparable to other paints.

Lacquers with acrylic paint belong to the polyurethane family and are generally used to highlight the natural colour of the wood, because they are more matt and transparent. While polyurethane paints have physical and chemical properties that make them suitable for surfaces exposed to a high degree of wear, acrylic paints are generally more elastic and transparent.

UV lacquering has a neutral acrylic base that is hardened by means of special lamps that emit high-energy UV light rays. This method significantly reduces the drying time and hardens the resins.

Lacquered surfaces, the best choice for a refined finish

The Dibiesse matt and glossy lacquered finish is applied to a panel of MDF wood fibre, painted with a polyester base (a decision that guarantees excellent chemical and mechanical resistance, elevated fill capacity and resistance to the loss of colour intensity over the years) + 2 coats of polyurethane paint (which, it’s worth remembering, confer exceptional chemical and mechanical properties).

>>Glossy lacquered doors are then brushed to guarantee a level in excess of 100 gloss.<<

No edges are applied to the doors so they are slightly rounded at the corners which means the effect of the reflected light is softer. The range includes 24 colours, but the kitchen can potentially be lacquered with any colour starting from an RAL or NCS reference.

Without edges, with mild rounding of the doors, with the full colour of the doors, in a matt or glossy finish, the lacquered finish is the perfect choice for those who desire a clean, simple style. It is also very versatile since it can be paired with other finishes, highlighting the furnishings of the kitchen and of the other rooms in the house.

MAINTENANCE

Resistant to everyday use, to frequent cleaning and contact with water, a glossy lacquer, unlike a matt lacquer, reflects light, creating a mirror-like effect that can increase the visibility of hand prints on the surface.

The natural variability of colour on surfaces exposed to sunlight causes the colour to change slightly, especially for light colours. When completing a kitchen that has been around for a few years, it may be necessary to “recreate” the colour, as though it were an “on demand” colour, since the current colour of the kitchen may not match its original colour.

To clean lacquered surfaces, use a soft microfibre cloth with a neutral, non-abrasive detergent that doesn’t include bleach.

In general, when cleaning the kitchen, it’s always a good idea to avoid abrasive sponges and aggressive solvents that might damage the protective layer and the brilliance of the lacquer. After cleaning, it’s advisable to dry the surfaces immediately with a soft cloth to avoid the marks left by scale in the water. Aside from these precautions, the material does not require special care and can be used in other rooms of the house besides the kitchen.
